Students from Ukraine will have additional online lessons

Students from Ukraine enrolled in Bulgarian schools can now receive additional training in both Bulgarian as a foreign language and in individual subjects. This will make it easier and more successful for them to integrate into our education system. The trainings will be conducted in an electronic environment. For this purpose, students will be provided with technical devices for temporary use.

For each child, a school committee decides what education is needed. If there is a teacher in the school who can teach Bulgarian as a foreign language, he will lead the extra classes. If not, civil contract teachers can be hired. The same applies if additional teachers are needed in individual subjects. They can work with children individually or with groups of up to 3 or up to 5 children. For each hour spent, 15 levs will be paid to teachers.

All this became possible after changes in the project “Equal access to school education in times of crisis”. It was created to meet the challenges of the COVID-19 epidemic. Its aim is to prevent the interruption of the educational process and to provide conditions for inclusive education, as well as appropriate resources for access to quality education in the conditions of distance learning in an electronic environment.

The project is aimed at all students affected by online learning, including vulnerable groups. Now its scope has been expanded to include Ukrainian children admitted to Bulgarian schools.

The project “Equal access to school education in times of crisis” is implemented under the Operational Program “Science and Education for Smart Growth” 2014-2020, co-financed by the European Union through the European Structural and Investment Funds. Its total value is BGN 109,562,541.93 and will be implemented by the end of 2023.

Currently, applications have been submitted for 805 children and students from Ukraine who want to join the Bulgarian educational system. 237 of them are for kindergarten, 556 – for school. The age of 12 children is not specified. Applications for the most Ukrainian children were received in Burgas district – 320.

Currently, 115 Ukrainian students are enrolled and attending Bulgarian schools throughout the country, and 13 Ukrainian children are in kindergartens. The main problem before the admission remains the clarification of the health status of the candidates.
